‘Crossbow siege’ second day: Police clash with man ‘barricaded in Airbnb’ lasts 24 hours

An armed police siege involving a man suspected of pointing a crossbow through an Airbnb window has entered its second day.

Specialist negotiators arrived at the scene with a McDonald’s breakfast for the man who barricaded himself inside the terraced house in Tamworth, Staffordshire.

The clash has been going on for more than 24 hours after armed police arrived at the Cross Street scene at 10.30am on Tuesday.

This morning Staffordshire Police confirmed the siege had continued overnight. The force previously said a man refused to leave a property after he “made threats”.

The road was sealed off yesterday as specialist negotiators tried to convince the man to vacate the property.

Dozens of armed police could be seen pointing their guns at the address as police negotiated with the suspect.

The man is said to be armed with a crossbow and makes threats from the terraced house, where he is barricaded inside.

Residents of around 30 properties inside the cordon were also unable to travel to their homes. Footage also shows police dogs pacing the street.

Earlier, a female officer wearing a bulletproof vest and helmet was seen holding a Maccy bag and a hot drink as she walked down the street this morning.

Local residents said they had still not been allowed to return to their homes as the standoff continued.

One said: ‘The police were very nice about it and even got an old dear her medicine for her.

“But it’s starting to get quite frustrating now. They just took him to a McDonald’s to try to get him out.

“The bottom line is for this to be resolved peacefully, that’s all we really want.”

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: ‘Officers remain at the scene of an ongoing incident at a Cross Street property in Kettlebrook, Tamworth.

“We were called to the address at 10.30am yesterday (Tuesday 6th September) following reports of concerns for a man’s welfare.

“The man refused to leave the property and several threats were made.

“He has since engaged with specially trained negotiators who remain on the scene.

“No one was reported injured.

Residents said the man was staying at the Airbnb property but has since been told to leave.

He was seen “hanging from a window with a crossbow” and “shouting threats” at police.

A local, who did not wish to be named, said: ‘It’s quite scary. This guy who was staying there is locked up with a crossbow.

‘Officers communicated with him but he hasn’t moved at all and I don’t know what is taking them so long.

“There must have been around 50 police on the street yesterday. You can hear them shouting at each other, but everything they say hasn’t worked so far.

“I haven’t been able to go home for a whole day now, I spent the night with friends and came back to get my work uniform but I can’t.”

Another resident added: ‘We just hope it all ends safely. It’s been really tense and it’s scary that this could happen at your doorstep.

“Knowing that there is a man in there armed with a deadly weapon is very disturbing. It is generally a quiet street.

“But now there are SWAT teams with guns, police dogs and officers invading the place. It was crazy.

A woman said birmingham live that the property is an Airbnb that she was also staying at.

She said, “I’m staying with my boyfriend. It’s just the two of us and the man involved.

“I don’t know anything about him. His room is opposite ours but I haven’t spoken to him.

‘All my belongings are inside. It’s so scary to think we could have been there when it happened.

The road was temporarily closed, preventing residents from returning home. One, Daniel Pratt, said: ‘Job done but I can’t get in the front door because some guy has a crossbow out the window with about 50 cops on the street.

Another neighbour, Fiona Glover, added: ‘I was with my little kid and there were guns, I didn’t want to get too close.
