Culture Tour, Weed Church and Private Dinners
Residents and visitors to Denver know that it’s not hard to find a dispensary to buy weed from, although there are far fewer places to enjoy it. While companies like Tetra Lounge, The Joint Cafe and soon the Patterson Inn will offer space for 21+ year olds to indulge, there are a few more ways to experience cannabis culture in town.
Here are three elevated experiences to try in Denver.
Visit a marijuana grow operation
If you’ve ever wondered how your favorite strain of bud or concentrate is grown and processed, Seed and Blacksmith The cannabis company pulls back the curtain on its process during tours of its facilities in North Denver. The experience, much like a brewery tour, includes visiting plants in different stages of growth; observe staff harvesting and extracting marijuana; and even holding a pound of fresh flower. The 40-minute tour is free, although registration is required, and ends at the dispensary where you can buy souvenirs. It is forbidden to consume weed on site.
Tours are Thursdays and Fridays at noon and 6 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Seed & Smith, 5070 Oakland St. in Denver. Register on seedandsmith.com/cannabistour.
Visit the International Church of Cannabis
Opened in 2017, the International Church of Cannabis is home to a religious group known as the Elevationists, who believe that cannabis is an essential part of becoming the best version of yourself. Spanish artist Okuda San Miguel has painted bright and colorful murals on the walls and ceiling of the chapel, which are worth seeing even if you’re not a cannabis lover. The church is currently holding 20-minute laser light shows after each opening time to enhance the experience. Also watch for special events like comedy shows and theater. Marijuana use, however, is prohibited unless you are a member, so smoke before you go.
The International Church of Cannabis is open Friday through Monday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 400 S. Logan St. in Denver. Tickets for the laser light show are $25 for adults, $20 for students, and $10 for children 12 and under at the elevationists.org.
Book a private weed and dinner deal
Marijuana and food are natural complements, and Colorado-based company Cultivating Spirits has been hosting private dinner parties where they’ve been served side-by-side since 2014. The experience is as much about fine dining as it is about cannabis education, according to the founder. Philip Wolf, who, together with his chef, designs a special menu for each group based on their culinary preferences. Cultivating Spirits does not infuse food, but rather finds cannabis strains that offer harmonious and contrasting flavor profiles to accompany each dish, much like you might with wine. The company hosts dinners at homes or Airbnbs throughout Colorado, and partners with dispensaries where customers purchase their own cannabis. Cultivating Spirits also operates in Las Vegas and California with hopes of entering new legal marijuana markets soon.
To book a private event, visit cultivatingspirits.com. Dinners generally range from $135 to $250 per person, depending on group size.
