Cycle lane works at Wallisdown Road delayed for weeks

ROAD WORKS to build a new cycle lane at Wallisdown Road are due to continue for “a few more weeks”, the BCP Council has confirmed.

The heavy rains were blamed for the extra time needed to complete the “improvements”, which will resume in the New Year after the Christmas holidays.

They were originally scheduled to be completed on Friday, December 16.

The busy road has been closed westbound since early October as the council expands its existing extra-wide two-way cycle lanes.

Motorists are frustrated with increased traffic eastbound and on the detour route through Turbary Park Avenue.

A BCP spokesperson said: ‘Improvements to Wallisdown Road will help reduce journey times and encourage more residents, businesses and students to adopt healthier and environmentally friendly modes of transport. .

“Recent heavy rain has had a significant impact on the planned works program so we are extending the westbound closure of Wallisdown Road for a few more weeks.

“We understand how many residents travel to our towns over the Christmas period to see family, friends or shop in our main streets.

“For this reason, the westbound closure will be lifted for Christmas and will not be in place between December 22 and January 3.

“In the new year, we will continue to use additional on-site team members to complete these improvements as soon as possible.

“We look forward to more people enjoying the freedom to make new, sustainable travel choices in 2023, which will help transform the way people move around BCP.”

Last week the chief executive of Morebus said bus services had experienced “significant delays” which “coincided with the westbound closure of Wallisdown Road, which we know is an alternative route to the A338 for the traffic from Bournemouth to Poole”.

The works are part of the next phase of BCP Council’s installation of a cycle path, as well as pedestrian crossings and bus stops, along the Wallisdown Corridor and will take around five months.

Wallisdown area council ‘improvements’ began near Mountbatten Arms in November 2020.

The two-way cycle lane made headlines last year when motorists criticized it as ‘unsightly’ and ‘too big’.
