Do Say Toronto Wrong in Western New York?

How do you pronounce the word Toronto? To chase. Say it out loud. Because the Blue Jays want you to know that, you’re probably saying it wrong.

There are some words that seem easy to pronounce. But then when you hear other people say them, you realize how far away you were. Norfolk is one of those words. Norfolk people know how to pronounce it. And it’s not “Nor-foke”.

Today, as I scroll through Twitter, I see that some of us Americans are pronouncing the word “Toronto” incorrectly. When you hear people around the world say it, it’s “Tor-on-toe” but that’s not how they say it, and that’s not how they want you to didn’t say either.

The second T is silent?

Wait… that’s how I’ve said it all my life! And here I think I have to pronounce it using each letter. I don’t know which is more surprising – that I’ve said it that way all the time, or that I’m just noticing now that this is how we say it. As someone pointed out, it’s a bit like “Atlanta”. When you’re there, you just say “Atlanna”. It’s not “At-lan-ta”.

But they are right. If you ever listen to a pro show and they talk about Toronto, that’s how they say it, with the emphasis on the second t.

Hey man, if everyone stops calling the wings “Buffalo Wings”, I can totally agree to call Toronto “Torrono”.

They want to make sure people say it correctly because they’re going to say it more often. The Blue Jays are once again in the postseason and are looking for another championship to bring home.
