Duncan Curling Club to host U21 Provincial Playoffs

The Duncan Curling Club is hosting the Provincial Under-21 Curling Playoffs Jan. 25-29 at the Glen Harper Curling Center on Sherman Road.

“We will see five men’s teams and seven women’s teams curling during Championship week,” club president Jen Woike said. “These young women and men are athletes, students and community volunteers. At the competitive U21 level, most have been involved in curling from an early age. In the Cowichan Valley, we have so many past and recent national and world champions, at the junior men’s and women’s, senior and masters levels.

The week-long event will be streamed online with the semi-finals and finals airing on CBC Sports across Canada and broadcast by CBCSports.ca around the world.

There has been an 85% increase in viewership since 2020, Woike said, adding that in 2022 Curl BC’s YouTube channel alone was watched by 18,300 viewers throughout the week for matches. regular.

“These young curlers are the best of the best in British Columbia,” Woike said. “Their coaches, families, friends and fans will call the Cowichan Valley home. They will stay in our hotels, Airbnbs, they will eat in our restaurants, explore our shops and businesses. We hope to encourage them to return to enjoy our beautiful landscapes, trails and summer events.

Participants are racing for the opportunity to represent British Columbia at the Canadian Championships and World Junior level later in 2023.

“Come see in person at the curling club, you might be watching the next junior world champions,” Woike said.
