EU officials agree visa liberalization in Kosovo will come into force on January 1, 2024

The authorities of the member states of the European Union have reached an agreement that visa liberalization for Kosovo will come into effect on January 1, 2024.

Such an announcement was made by the recent report of Radio Free Europe, while the same pointed out that the agreement was reached during a meeting of visa advisers held in Brussels, Tuesday, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Previously, the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union requested that the process of visa liberalization in Kosovo be completed by December 1, 2023.

The issue of visa liberalization for Kosovo citizens was discussed for the first time at the meeting of the European Council working group on 13 October.

Shortly after the meeting, it was reported that France had proposed that Kosovo’s visa liberalization process be linked to the operationalization of the European Travel Information and Authorization Process (ETIAS) and that a such a proposal was supported by Belgium, Sweden, the Netherlands, including Spain.

After the October 13 meeting, SchengenVisaInfo.com asked the Spanish authorities if they would support France’s proposal at the next meeting of the working group which was to be held on 9 November.

But, Spain’s foreign ministry said EU countries’ position on the issue would be clarified on Nov. 9, giving no details about their position.

“The subject has just started to be dealt with in Brussels, and it will follow its normal procedure throughout which the positions of the various Member States will be clarified,” he added. Previously, the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU announced that it supported France’s proposal that the process of visa liberalization in Kosovo is linked to the functionalization of ETIAS.

In addition, the Czech Presidency told SchengenVisaInfo.com that it wants to see a positive Council decision by the end of 2022 on this issue. In addition, the Czech Presidency also stressed that it would like to see an agreed timetable as to when the visa liberalization for Kosovo would come into effect.
