We first met Matthew and Marissa — now Mr. and Mrs. Metzler — when they returned safely to Pittsburgh from Florida after Hurricane Ian.

They were in Fort Myers for what was supposed to be their dream beach wedding.

The couple and their bridal party were staying at an Airbnb days before the big day when they were forced to evacuate.

Their initial plans were now ruined, but their outlook still remained positive.

“I love it,” Marissa said. “I would have married him in a box, so it didn’t matter to me. I just think family is very important to us, and the fact that we all made it out alive – and we know that people didn’t – – I think we were just grateful, so it didn’t matter. We knew we were going to get married. It didn’t matter where.

“Where” turned out to be here at home.

“It was kind of a bridge thing on both sides of the family,” Matthew said. “It was really amazing to see.”

The ceremony took place at the Jefferson United Presbyterian Church and the reception at the Georgetown Center. “Every vendor we’ve used has bent over backwards,” Marissa said.

Hairdressers and make-up artists were also found locally and at the last minute. “I was only a few weeks old, and these girls are booked months in advance,” Marissa said. “And they were like, ‘Whatever you need, we’ll make it work.'”

Marissa said the photographer “actually came from Fort Myers.”

It took a team to pull off this dream new wedding, but the Metzlers say they wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Honestly, I think it was better than Florida,” Marissa said.

“I hate to say it was a blessing in disguise because there was so much damage and so many lives lost, but it was really amazing to have everyone together,” Matthew said.
