Address: 339 Convent Avenue, New York, NY, 10031

When referring to “The Royal Tenenbaums” from 2001, Wes Anderson had in mind the photo of Orson Welles “The Magnificent Ambersons”. One day, while looking for places, especially a house “where you would have a really strong sense of family history,” he and his team came across a Harlem mansion that was “Ambersons”-esque, and as he said further on Observerthat the house had a sort of storybook quality to it.” It was once inhabited by Charles H. Tuttlea New York civic leader, and his family.

The house had recently been purchased in foreclosure by Willie Woods, and Anderson persuaded Woods not to renovate the place and revealed to Vulture that “the amount we ended up paying him to use it. He finally got the house at no cost.” In “The Royal Tenenbaums”, 339 Convent Avenue became 111 Archer Avenue, home to a dysfunctional family of book society types. Location manager Tom Whelan said the house was “almost a character in the movie, it’s like half the movie”, and Anderson, who had a lot of interiors pre-drawn in his mind, said enjoyed every inch of the place, including the roof.

The Flemish Revival style mansion has six bedrooms and the same number of gas fireplaces, over 50 windows and has recently been available for hireto house all your teepees, board games and Adidas tracksuits.
