Eurovision fans rush to book hotel rooms in Liverpool as Airbnb prices top £1,000 a night around the date of the song contest next May.

The rush to book hotels comes weeks before tickets for the event go on sale. Liverpool have been officially chosen to host Eurovision 2023 on Friday, beating other runners-up Glasgow.

A two-bedroom apartment in Merseyside listed on Airbnb was priced at £1,333 per night during the Eurovision weekend, from Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 May – costing £4,701 in total, including a £20 cleaning and £681 service charge.

Booking.com – the official partner of Eurovision – has informed customers that 98% of seats are already unavailable during the Eurovision weekend.

An analysis of I found that the cheapest option on the website for two adults is currently just over £2,000 for a three-night stay, with only one room left at that price.

This is a 4.5 out of 10 rated homestay with a double bedroom and a shared bathroom. It costs £640 the weekend before the Song Contest at Liverpool Arena, and as little as £153 for the whole weekend after.

Other sites are also running out of affordable options, with Lastminute.com offering nine accommodation deals from £2,324 up to over £10,000 for two people and one bedroom. The site offers 238 options the previous weekend with prices starting at £125 for three nights.

Neither Trivago nor Hotels.com seem to have any options.

Prices skyrocketed on Airbnb with some locals suggesting they will rent rooms in their homes to cash out.

Airbnb apartment prices for a single night have exceeded £1,000, I‘s analysis revealed, with some of the generally more affordable options costing between £3,000 and £4,000 for the weekend.

A four-guest house appeared for just £100 a night – totaling just over £300 for the weekend including cleaning costs – but was picked up within half an hour.

Other options have become completely unaffordable, with a central Liverpool apartment costing £917 per night and £3,245 in total for the Eurovision weekend – compared to nearly £600 less on weekends before and after .

Some enterprising locals appear to have joined just for the occasion – with the only 2023 dates available to book covering the Eurovision weekend.

The same property has not been listed for any other dates in 2023 but is £4,000 less at £725 for a three night stay in December.

An Airbnb spokesperson said: “These listings are not reserved and are not representative of prices on Airbnb. The average price per night for accommodation booked on Airbnb during Eurovision is around £230 and helps local families to increase their income and benefit from visitors to Liverpool.

The song contest is estimated to contribute around £30m to the local economy.

Eurovision presenter Graham Norton has announced that Liverpool have won the battle to host him on the BBC The only show Friday night.

Ukrainian Entry Kalush Orchestra won this year’s competition, held in Turin, Italy. Normally Ukraine would host the event, but the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) decided the show could not be held there safely after the Russian invasion.

Because British entrant Sam Ryder finished second in the competition, Britain was lucky enough to host the competition – now in its 67th year – for the 9th time.

Birmingham, Sheffield, Leeds and Manchester were knocked out of the race last week. Before that, an original list of 20 candidates had been narrowed down by the BBC and the EBU.
