FinTech Ukraine: Uber to launch app donations

Revolutionthe global financial super app, has raised more than 10 million euros ($10.9 million) to support victims of the war in Ukraine through donations to the appeal of the Ukrainian Red Cross, announced the Stockholm-based company.

The money includes customer donations as well as contributions from Revolut. The campaign to allow millions of customers around the world to make an instant donation to the Ukrainian Red Cross appeal started on February 25 and has raised more than 1 million euros (1.09 million) in the first 24 hours. Since then, users from over 50 countries have participated in the call.

Uber plans to launch an in-app donation button to allow US customers to donate to the International Rescue Committee to help Ukraine. Plans are underway to make in-app donation features available to Uber users in more countries in the coming days, the ride-sharing company said.

Uber said it would match donations made through this feature up to $1 million. The company announced that it will also donate an additional $500,000 to the International Federation of the Red Cross and the U.S. World Food Program, in support of United Nations World Food Program humanitarian efforts in Ukraine and in neighboring countries.

As Ukrainians flee heavy fighting by Russian forces, the Eastern European nation has received nearly $100 million in cryptocurrency donations, according to Ukraine spokesman Alex Bornyakov, reported. CoinDesk.com Wednesday, March 9.

During an online emergency briefing, Bornyakov, deputy minister of digital transformation, said that more than $60 million had been received in the main fund managed by Kuna, the Ukrainian crypto exchange. The rest was sent to several other smaller funds. He told the news agency that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shares the view that the use of crypto could be a breakthrough from an economic point of view.

The Utah Jazz Foundation is partnering with Airbnb.org, a nonprofit that offers temporary stays for people in crisis, to provide housing for refugees fleeing Ukraine, Airbnb announced.

The pledge will support Airbnb’s initiative to provide free short-term housing to up to 100,000 refugees fleeing Ukraine to Poland, Germany, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and others neighboring countries. Utah Jazz’s donation is expected to fund more than 32,200 nights of accommodation for Ukrainian refugees.
