Former NFL QB Trent Dilfer drops out of high school to become Alabama-Birmingham football coach

Former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer is set to be named the new football coach at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, according to a ESPN.com report.

Dilfer, 50, resigned his position as football coach at Lipscomb Academy in Nashville on Wednesday a day before his program plays for its second straight state championship.

Dilfer told his team that he had quit according to an email sent to Lipscomb Academy families by Principal of Schools Brad Schultz.

“Moments ago, Coach Trent Dilfer met with members of the high school football team to let them know he was stepping down as head coach of the program,” Schultz wrote Wednesday.

“Later in the day, the University of Alabama-Birmingham officially announces the appointment of Coach Dilfer as head coach of the UAB Blazers. The timing of this outing is not ideal with the championship game of State Div II-AA tomorrow. But, because the information leaked overnight and is being reported in national media, we needed to share this news with our community. We are coordinating with the State Athletic Department. “UAB on the timing of the official public announcement, which will take place later today. We intend to keep our focus on our student-athletes and support them as they head to Chattanooga today” today for tomorrow’s league match.”

Dilfer would replace interim coach and offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent, who took over from Bill Clark after Clark resigned in June for health reasons.

UAB finished 6-6 this season, with a 4-4 record in Conference USA and will await its fate this weekend.

Dilfer spent 13 seasons in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ersand he was the Ravens’ starting quarterback in their Super Bowl-winning season in 2000.
