Frank Lloyd Wright’s stunning final design returns for $8.9 million

There’s something poetic about famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s latest completed project to be put up for sale alongside one of his first residential projects. Just west of Chicago, the two-story shingles George W. Smith Housean early creation, is listed for $595,000, while across the country in Phoenix, Wright’s Circular Sun House, his last residential design before his death, recently relisted for $8.95 million. dollars.

Although the house of George W. Smith shows a gifted architect embarking on experimentation, the Circular Sun House, also known as the Norman Lykes House, is the creation of a master. The Monolithic House in the Desert Mountains is one of the architect’s most unique offerings and one of 14 circular houses he designed during his lifetime. Styled to mimic the curves of the nearby cliffs, the home spans 3,095 square feet and is outfitted with three bedrooms, three bathrooms, an office, den, and library.

The office is located on the top floor.

The interior walls are clad in Philippine mahogany, while the floors are slate. Other unique elements include pink Italian marble in the master bath and dozens of steel-framed windows that open to the view of Palm Canyon below. Wright designed the house as a series of overlapping concentric circles, which create a distinct floor plan that “flows seamlessly from room to room,” the listing states. Notably, circular patterns continue to appear throughout the property, including cutouts around an exterior wall, which conceals a crescent-shaped pool, as well as semicircular windows found in the kitchen and office. Many elements of the built-in furniture, a common feature of Wright’s designs, also use curved or circular shapes.

The crescent-shaped pool could be described as Wright’s version of the popular red bean shape.
