Garage Cafe in Birmingham sold to long-time customer

The Garage Café in Birmingham will undergo some changes in the new year.

According to a Facebook post, the venerable Southside bar and restaurant has been sold to longtime customer Bob Ryan, otherwise known as “Irish” Bob, for an undisclosed sum.

Chelsea Bishop will be the coach.

“Bob will continue the tradition of The Garage…it’s a unique character, it’s vibe and everything we all love about the bar,” according to the announcement.

The place is known for its garden, which features items from the collection of former owner Fritz Woehle.

His daughter Kay explained in the Facebook post that the time she spent managing the place deprived him of the upkeep of the collection.

“So many people are inquiring about antiques in the yard,” the post read. “However, I’ve been so busy over the past 8 years focusing on the bar that I’ve neglected the interest of my dad’s collection, which I know people are eager to see and possibly buy. to buy.”

Woehle said she plans to focus her attention on the court after a short vacation.

The The Garage Café had belonged to Jimmy Watsonwho opened his funky little Southside watering hole in 1994 and transformed it into a hidden gem known nationwide for its antique-studded courtyard, eclectic characters and laid-back charm.

Watson died of complications from a car accident in 2014. His brother Kenny Watson inherited the business and carried it on in his younger brother’s memory.

Kay Woehle then took over the bar.
