Gasworks road closure at Barrack Road, Christchurch, overtaking

THE closure of one of the main roads through Christchurch for the gasworks will not end as planned.

Barrack Road has been closed eastbound between the junction with Stour Road and Fountain Roundabout since Monday September 26.

This caused major traffic problems and delays in the city center while SGN engineers carry out urgent repairs.

The work was due to be completed by Friday, September 30, but the utility company said that would not be done.

SGN spokesman Bradley Barlow said: “Unfortunately, due to the complexity of this repair, we will have to continue working at Barrack Road this weekend and into next week.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause the local community and hope to reopen the two eastbound lanes on Barrack Road as soon as possible.”

The Daily Echo has asked SGN to confirm when the company expects the work to be complete. The spokesperson said it was too early to tell at this stage.

As reported, the detour route while the road is closed east via Stour Road and Bargates to enter the town centre.

Temporary traffic lights have been put in place to try to ease delays at the junction of Stour Road and Bargates.

Engineers are working to repair a main leak under the road where Barrack Road meets Fountain Roundabout.
