ghezzi novak reveals pisco desert retreat

Architecture studio based in Lima Ghezzi Novak finished this little one, drink and brick home in the serene coastal desert landscape of Pisco in Peru. Secluded in the surrounding natural context, this two bedroom retreat is perched on the olive grove of El Alamein. With its low form, its whitewashed brick façade that echoes the clarity of the sand and its eucalyptus wooden roof, the residence becomes an extended shadow in harmonious coexistence with the intensity and diversity of the Pisco desert.

16 angled eucalyptus poles form the overhanging roof

With the design of the Pisco Desert Retreat, Ghezzi Novak sought to establish a social connection with the home and the surrounding natural context. To begin with, the architects raised a sloping, overhanging roof that protrudes beyond the structure to form a small shaded patio space in the garden. Beneath this space, climatic and scenic forces are capitalized, unifying spaces of different qualities including indoor living, outdoor terraces and pure extension. Made up of 16 eucalyptus hardwood poles, the roof not only provides shelter and cool shade from the harsh desert sun, but also has significant social value, becoming a gathering place for the house dwellers, encouraging them to interact with nature. Eucalyptus hardwood poles organize the structural order of the roof, and its coverage is defined according to the degree of shading and waterproofing required below. Posts in the ground support the structure and serve as a guide for interlacing climbing plants.

Inside the house, the exposed brick walls have been covered in white, reflecting the gleaming desert sand within and enlivening the space. Ghezzi Novak architects incorporate windows with double-post wooden frames to seal the interiors from the sand, especially from the dust storms that are common in the region. The brick is the building unit of the inner enclosure, acting as a load-bearing and thermal mass element. The construction drawing is based on the proportions of the masonry unit in relation to the eucalyptus posts that run the length of the house connecting all the layers of habitation.
