An employee of a Utica-area attorney’s office is accused of illegally increasing her salary by $27,000 over the course of a year.

Utica police said they were contacted by the district attorney’s office out of concern that one of their employees stole the money. The issue arose following an audit by an outside accounting firm, police said.

Criminal Investigation Division investigators say Ilion’s Karen Durant intentionally altered her paychecks, giving herself between $500 and $2,000 on multiple occasions.

The 42-year-old faces two felony charges, Third Degree Grand Larceny and First Degree Falsifying Business Documents, police said.
