MANILA, Philippines — Almond Vosotros had a game for the ages for Gilas Pilipinas 3×3 after draining a game-winning brace to stun seeded Mongolia 21-20 in the FIBA Asia Cup Quarter-Finals 3×3 in Singapore on Sunday, July 10.
Vosotros looked set to tow Gilas to an upset victory after sinking a late brace for an 18-15 lead, but the veteran Mongols scored with a 5-0 pivot swing to take the lead, 20-18, put in evidenced by a Dulguun Enkhbat and -a bucket.
However, an untimely foul by Mongolia at 1:37 sent Vosotros over the line for two free throws instead of one, as they were on their seventh foul.
The PBA 3×3 champion made the first and missed the second, but Samboy de Leon caught the miss and returned the ball to Vosotros, who drilled the killing blow in cold blood for the victory.
Vosotros fully atoned for Dazzling defeat of Gilas 11-21 against China with 8 big points, followed by 7 from De Leon.
“Every time I’m open, I shoot it. That’s my role on this team,” Vosotros said after the thriller. “We didn’t give up.”
Joseph Eriobu scored 5 while Lervin Flores netted a point for the Philippine team who now advance to the semi-finals later at 6:15 p.m. against New Zealand, who beat Japan, 16-14, in the another quarter-final duel.
