You don’t have to be a royal to stay in a castle. Thanks to Airbnb, you and your team can put on your best wreaths and dresses and travel to Bolton, New York. Here you can stay in Highland Castle, which sits atop a mountain overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake George.
We sent our resident Airbnb Chief Explorer Kirby porterfield to discover the Royal Castle located in upstate New York (you can watch his journey up there!). She gave the property a score of nine out of nine for antique French tapestries, a rating scale derived from the rich art of the chateau.
Highlands Castle, which can be booked from the official website, or his Airbnb announcement– is a hidden gem nestled among the Adirondack Mountains. Guests will have access to almost the entire castle including the entrance hall, vestibule, great room, music room / library, kitchen, dining room, family room, cloakroom, etc. The castle can accommodate up to eight people.

Inside, you’ll find medieval art everywhere. Think: life-size statues of knights, Romeo and Juliet stained glass doors, magnificent candelabras, Renaissance-style rugs, oval French doors, and even a few hidden doors that lead to secret rooms. You’ll instantly feel like you’ve been transported back to the 17oos years. Surprisingly enough, however, the chateau was only built in the 1980s, a detail you’ll appreciate when you see the state-of-the-art kitchen.
Besides the lush interiors of the castle, its location is perfect for a fabulous stay. Highlands Castle is just a three minute drive from charming Bolton Landing town center, where you will find a supermarket, gourmet restaurants, a brasserie, antique shops and more. There are also nearby public beaches, hiking / biking trails, and opportunities for kayaking and canoeing, and more.
