COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ā Ohio House lawmakers on Tuesday picked a Republican from rural southern Ohio as the next leader of the GOP-led chamber, after support slipped away from another representative who had won an informal vote weeks ago for this powerful role in the political state.
Rep. Jason Stephens of Kitts Hill was elected Speaker of the House with more support from Democrats than from his own party. He beat Rep. Derek Merrin of Monclova by 54 votes to Merrin’s 43 on the opening day of the new two-year legislative session.
