Jawed, Chad and Steve all resigned from PayPal in early 2005. At Max’s Opera Cafe, a local coffee shop/deli, they began brainstorming ideas for their business ventures.
It was Jawed’s idea for an online platform where people could upload and share videos according to the caption.

Jawed came up with the idea for YouTube and wrote the first version of the website, which went live in February of the same year. He also has the honor of starring in the very first YouTube video. In the video titled “Me at the Zoo”, friend Yakov Lapitsky films the San Diego Zoo.
He briefly describes elephant trunks in the 19-second video, which shows him standing in front of a group of them. At 8:27 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2005, “Jawed” uploaded it to YouTube.
Google Sale:
Amazingly, just months after co-founding YouTube, Jawed left the company to pursue a master’s degree in computer science at Stanford. As a result, he agreed to take a smaller share of the company’s capital than his co-founders had.
It was the efforts of Chad Hurley and Steve Chen that led to the creation of the groundbreaking media empire known as YouTube.
When YouTube was sold to Google in October 2006, Jawed retained a large stake despite leaving the company. Google paid $1.65 billion in stock to acquire YouTube.
On the day the deal closed, Jawed received 137,443 shares of Google, bringing the total value of his stake in the company to $64 million. Those shares are now worth more than $350 million, before taxes, assuming he didn’t sell any, thanks to Google’s success and rising stock price.
At closing, Steve Chen and Chad Hurley each received 700,000 shares of Google worth $345 million. If no shares were ever sold, those shares would be worth just under $2 billion today.

Jawed, Keith Rabois and Kevin Hartz launched Youniversity Ventures, aka YVentures, as a venture capital fund in March 2008. In April 2009, Jawed invested in Airbnb’s seed round through ventures. Reddit, Eventbrite and Palantir are among the other companies they have invested in.
