ITV launches ITVX social media ahead of new streaming service

TVI announced a major change to their social media ahead of the launch of their new streaming service.

The broadcaster told viewers to prepare for “the UK’s newest new streaming service” in a Twitter post on Monday, October 3.

The channel informed viewers that starting this week, the familiar ITV2 The Twitter account would undergo a serious name change.

It comes after ITV revealed in March that it was launching the “first integrated platform supported by advertising and subscriptions” called ITVX.

In Monday’s social media post, ITV wrote: “Hello ITV2 fans!

“We have some news. Due to the imminent launch of the UK’s newest streaming service, ITVX, we are streamlining our social channels.

“This means the @ITV2 page will soon become @ITVX.”

The broadcaster reassured viewers that “ITV’s channels aren’t going anywhere” and viewers don’t have to do anything to access their best programmes.

He added: “We just put the best content from all your favorite shows in one place.

“You can also follow us on @ITV.”

Some users were a bit confused by the announcement asking the channel why they are not just creating another social media account for the streaming service.

One person asked: ‘Why not just create a new @ITVX instead of hijacking this stream?’

A second viewer added, “Um, why? Itv2 is still a channel, what’s the point?”

While a third user asked, “Will @itvhub be merged as well?”

When will ITV’s new ITVX streaming platform launch?

ITV2’s social media will become ITVX from October 7, but as the broadcaster streamlines its accounts ahead of ITVX’s launch, it’s unclear what will happen to the rest of its output on social media.

The broadcaster teased that the launch of its new platform was “imminent” and Variety reported that it will be online in November.

What is ITV’s new streaming platform, ITVX?

Viewers will be able to watch thousands of hours of programs for free with adverts on ITV’s first integrated streaming service.

However, there will also be a subscription tier which will deliver all of this content ad-free and, in addition, will deliver thousands of additional hours of UK box sets from BritBox and content from other partners.

ITVX will also be used to deliver much of the new ITV content, which will then air on linear TV months later.

Carolyn McCall, Managing Director of ITV, said: “The digital acceleration we are announcing today builds on everything we have achieved during the first phase of our More Than TV strategy.

“We are reinvigorating our streaming business, fundamentally shifting our focus to think digital first, as well as optimizing our delivery channels, continuing to attract unparalleled mass audiences.

“In doing so, we are responding to changing viewing habits, but also to the changing needs of our advertisers. This will enable ITV to continue to be both the first choice for commercial viewers and advertisers.”
