When planning a wedding, deciding who to invite or not can be a tough call – just ask the Duchess of Cambridge’s sister, Pippa.

Five years ago today she married her husband James Matthews in a stunning ceremony, where Prince George was a pageboy and Princess Charlotte a bridesmaid.

It was obvious that Kate would be at her sister’s wedding alongside her husband, Prince William, and their children.

But when it came to inviting Prince Harry and his new girlfriend Meghan Markle over, that posed a potential problem.

Their relationship, which they had managed to keep secret for five months, was now making headlines and royal fans were desperate to see the new couple together.

In the book Finding Freedom, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand claim that Meghan had planned to attend the ceremony.

She had even bought a new outfit and a hat – but the decision was made not to attend the nuptials.

The authors claim that Pippa and her mother Carole feared Meghan’s presence could “overshadow the main event”.

They also added that a headline was released on the morning of the wedding, which compared Pippa and Meghan’s buttocks, which was the final straw.

The book says: “Harry and Meghan agreed that she could not turn up to church, just fifty yards from a specially set up media enclosure, after such crude coverage.

“If they feared their arrival would create a media circus despite all the precautions taken, now they had no doubt that it would.

“Meghan’s church outfit and Philip Treacy’s hat should be worn another time.”

Instead, Harry dropped Meghan off at another wedding guest’s Airbnb and then walked to church alone.

Meanwhile, Meghan got ready for the reception and waited for Harry to return so they could have lunch together before heading back to the Middletons for the evening celebrations.

But when they arrived, Meghan couldn’t spend the evening with Harry by her side as she imagined.

Scobie and Durand write: “Sitting together in the custom glass marquee that has been erected on the eighteen-acre property should have been a fun night for the couple, but, at Pippa’s request, neither couple sat down together. sat together.”

Just under a year later, Pippa and her husband James, along with Carole, Michael and James Middleton all attended Meghan and Harry’s big day at Windsor Castle.

Now married for five years, Pippa and James have two children, a three-year-old son called Arthur and a one-year-old daughter called Grace.
