Man arrested after allegedly stealing copper from Birmingham church

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WIAT) – A man has been arrested and charged with allegedly stealing copper from a church in Birmingham over the weekend.

On Sunday, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a copper theft from a church in 12th Yard NW in Birmingham. During the investigation, deputies were able to develop a description of the suspect, as well as a description of the suspect’s vehicle.

Law enforcement were able to use surveillance cameras near Gadsden Highway to locate a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle. Deputies then arrested Bradley Hanel, 27, of Centerpoint, after discovering copper that appeared to have been cut from the church’s HVAC unit.

During their investigation, deputies also found Hanel with multiple IDs, credit cards and prescription drugs that had not been issued to him, as well as burglary tools.

Hanel is charged with Trafficking in Stolen Identity, Receipt of Stolen Property 1st Degree, Larceny 1st Degree, Criminal Mischief 1st Degree, Theft of Property 2nd and 3rd Degree, Possession of Consumer Paraphernalia drugs and possession of burglary tools. He is being held in Jefferson County Jail with $80,000.
