Marriott is expanding Homes & Villas in South Africa – and at R170,000 a night it’s the most expensive stay

Marriott International’s Homes & Villas offering, which offers private home rentals, has expanded its presence in South Africa with a portfolio of nearly 300 properties.

Marriott International is the world’s largest hotel chain, with more than 7,600 properties across 30 brands. With Protea Hotels as the dominant brand in South Africa, Marriott controls a portfolio of 49 properties in the country, including its executive apartment offering for longer stays.

Sheraton, Autograph Collection, Westin and Design hotels are part of Marriott’s upscale offering in South Africa.

The growing popularity among online marketplaces that connect travelers with accommodations and vacation rentals – the meteoric rise of Airbnb over the past decade is a clear example of this – has disrupted the traditional hotel market.

In response, Marriott International launched Homes & Villas in 2019. Working with local property management partners, Marriott selects listed high-end and luxury homes, ensuring properties meet strict design, cleanliness, safety and amenity standards.

Since its launch in 2019, Homes & Villas by Marriott has grown to include more than 50,000 whole-home rentals in 500 destinations around the world.

Marriott began planning its South African expansion in 2020, after conduct a survey of the home rental market Across the country. Amid the Covid-19 pandemic that has devastated travel and tourism, Marriott has tentatively launched its Homes & Villas offering with a small selection of units in Cape Town.

It has recently expanded to Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal, marking its official launch in South Africa with nearly 300 properties now listed on Marriott’s Homes & Villas booking platform.

Most of the houses on offer are in Cape Town. In KwaZulu-Natal, stays are mainly concentrated in the Ladysmith region, around the Nambiti Private Game Reserve. The Johannesburg portfolio includes homes in Rosebank, Hyde Park and Sandton.

The priciest stay on offer is a luxury beachfront villa that overlooks Camps Bay and Clifton along Cape Town’s Atlantic coast. One night at “Cape Luxurystarts from $11,197 or around R170,000.

The five-bedroom villa can sleep up to 10 people and has its own private gym, bar and infinity pool. Blackout blinds, air conditioning, and widescreen TVs are standard in all rooms. En-suite bathrooms include freestanding tubs, double vanity sinks, and oversized showers.

The second most expensive stay offered is less than 3 km from the “Cap Luxe”. The six-bedroom “Cape Bond”less than a mile from Camps Bay beach, sleeps up to 12 people and, through Homes & Villas by Marriott, costs $6,402 or R98,000 per night.
