Meet Cabincore – A Fall Fashion Trend for Peak Hygge
The comfortable season is imminent. And whether you spent your summer outdoors as a hiker or a romp, now is the time to adopt a more laid-back attitude. Enter the cabin fashion trend: it’s reminiscent of foggy mornings spent mushroom hunting, afternoons crocheting by the fire in your A-frame cabin, and candlelit evenings with glasses of red wine and candles. spaghetti made from scratch. So get out your sweater vest and woolen socks, it’s time to get woodsy.
The past two years have seen the rise of a range of staple aesthetics to help usher you into your cabin era. You may have dressed in the ruffled, romantic patterns of cottagecore, with delicate picnics and chintzy lace. Or, on the contrary, perhaps you preferred the sporty practicality of gorpcore – a trend that celebrates functional gear rather than capital F fashion. Cabincore is a trend that manages to combine the best of both: think, a cozy cotton dress with an argyle knit layered on top. Or maybe cashmere joggers tucked into rain boots with a quilted jacket layered for extra warmth. The trend finds hygge perfection in its hybridization.
“It’s the perfect mix to feel a little dressy and stylish without sacrificing comfort and practicality, which fashion can often do,” says Morgane Sezalory, founder of the Parisian brand. Sezane. “We love a pull-on-and-go dress that always makes you look well-dressed or the richest, chunkiest knit as the season turns to sweater time.”
That romantic comfort isn’t exactly new – 15 minutes from Taylor Swift Very good video which was released last November looks like a blow-by-blow encapsulation of the all-inclusive taupe jacket, plaid flannel and chunky red scarf trend. But, as many women have continued to explore a hybrid work life post-pandemic, a Slack escape from anywhere to a cabin in the woods is not only increasingly appealing, but also doable. Comfy staples can work for both a Zoom meeting and a lunchtime hike.
“After the past two years, no one wants to go back to wearing clothes that aren’t practical or comfortable,” says Christopher Bevans, creative director at Eddie Bauer. “However, people want to feel more put together again, and a great button-up flannel shirt or a fun pop-color fleece are great styles to do both.” Combining rich fall textures like cashmere and flannel with the latest Goretex gear from brands like Patagonia, Snow Peak, or even Nike allows the wearer to embrace the variety of low-maintenance options.
“People’s interest in the outdoors has increased over the past couple of years, influencing how they want to dress,” Bevans continues. Gucci’s collaboration with The North Face (which first launched in 2020) and Bottega Veneta’s Fall 2022 polka dot dresses are reminders of how the designers of top luxury fashion brands have to mind the great outdoors. Even for those who aren’t going to see the leaves this fall, combining athletic gear with delicate, romantic pieces can offer a playful and balanced approach to fall dressing.
