National Fish and Chip Awards 2023: Leeds Bearded Sailor and Fish Bank chippies battle it out to be crowned best in the UK

The Bearded Sailor in Pudsey and the Fish Bank in Sherburn in Elmet were named finalists in the National Fish and Chip Awards’ Top 20 Takeaway of the Year category.

Whiteheads Fish and Chips in Hornsea and Elmet and Auckley Friery in Doncaster also made the shortlist. The 20 finalists were selected after an extensive process of judging the top 40 takeout fish and chips, which were announced last month.

The Takeout of the Year category is sponsored by Pukka Pies, McWhinneys, Smales, VA Whitley, Friars Pride, Henry Colbecks and BD Signs. The winner will be announced at the National Fish and Chip Awards, hosted by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), on February 28 at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge.

Andrew Crook, President of the NFFF, said: “We have received such a high level of entries this year, for this category in particular, which makes it a very difficult but rewarding judging process. The top 20 really demonstrates a strong commitment to the fish and chips industry and to the UK public, so we’re delighted to see so many shortlisted from across the country.

“Congratulations to everyone involved, that’s a huge achievement in itself.”
