New phone scam targets Amazon customers in New Jersey

A new phone scam is targeting Amazon customers in New Jersey, and on the face of it, it looks legit.

I received one of these calls on Monday.

The caller ID said “Amazon Fulfillment”, so I took it. I happened to be waiting for a delayed package to arrive.

A recorded message in a pleasant female voice warned that they had detected “unusual activity” on my Amazon account. The call was very specific, saying someone had ordered a MacPro computer and Apple EarPods.

If I didn’t place this order, I was asked to “press one” and I would be logged into the Amazon Fraud division.

For a moment, I almost did.

Then I hung up and quickly checked my Amazon order history, and realized it was a scam.

On its website, Amazon warns: “While some Amazon services will make outbound calls to customers, Amazon will never ask you to disclose or verify sensitive personal information, or offer you a refund that you do not expect. .”

Another search for scam reporting websites explains that if I had pressed one, I would have been connected to someone trying to get my Amazon password and verify my credit card information.

I regularly report these types of scams, but even I almost fell for this one.

Similar scams are spread via SMS and email. Never click on any links.

With so much of our shopping done online, these types of scams are on the rise.

The reason scammers keep doing this is very simple: it works. And I almost broke down.

Take this as a continued warning to check everything and never give out your personal information over the phone.

If you believe you have received a fraudulent or fraudulent call from someone claiming to be from Amazon, you can report it here.

You should also report it to the United States Federal Trade Commission and at the New Jersey Consumer Affairs Division.
