In recent history there has never been a memorial race at Lawton Speedway for a driver, the only other memorial race is named after the track’s late owner, Lanny Edwards, and is held late in the season, during the winter national championships. This week, the track pays tribute to driver Rob Bland.
I’ve only met Rob Bland once, but I’ve seen him many times over the years at Lawton Speedway. He was a runner, but he was so much more than that, he loved his sport and was always ready to help other runners be better at the sport.
Rob was killed in a horrific event late last year, and his death was devastating to racers and fans not only at Lawton Speedway but at other tracks across Oklahoma. He loved speed and competition. But more than that, Rob has donated his time and money to help families and children at various events sponsored by Lawton Speedway.
Marcy Edwards Davis, track promoter at Lawton Speedway said:
Rob was a real Lawton Speedway guy, he always supported the track and was so easy going. He never complained and was the first to apologize if he caused any mishaps during races. He was such a fun and loving guy.
Lawton Speedway, along with the Lawton Speedway Drivers and Fans Association have planned to honor their friend Rob Bland.
• During the Opening Ceremonies, Rob’s father will drive his car behind the race truck while Kristen Crow spreads Rob’s ashes on the track. We ask drivers and pit family to wear Rob’s shirts if you have them or a brightly colored shirt, and immediately line up on the back wall and through turns 3 and 4.
• Rob’s limited modified race car will be parked in the winner’s circle so that if the story winners wish, his car will be featured in the story winner’s photo.
• After the races they will have a “pit party” with volleyball in the infield for the RIDERS and PIT FAMILY. There are a few rules – cars must be loaded, no side-by-sides, golf carts, or four-wheeled vehicles, and Lawton Speedway will not be liable for injuries. Please stick around after the races and help celebrate Rob!

Rob loved racing and the amazing people he met from track to track. The racing community was like a second family to him. He worked so hard to make his car a winning car, but where he finished was just a bonus. The real win for him was that all of his family and friends had an amazing night on the track. He would have helped anyone, all they had to do was ask if it was watching something or someone needing coins to get back there.
