OMG $10 million from airbnb! fund will help architects build outrageous homes
Airbnb’s open call for ‘world’s craziest’ designs
Airbnb has announced that it is on the hunt for the “craziest spaces in the world” and will help pay the bill to build them with its OMG! funds. The initiative takes its name from the company OMG! Category listings – a curated collection of the most unique homes available for the stay – which already include a massive boot, a UFO house, and a gothic-style grassy hobbit hole.
The OMG! is an open competition in which 100 winning candidates will each receive $100,000 to build their unusual home. The competition has just opened, with architects, designers and do-it-yourselfers invited to submit their vision in the form of “blueprints, blueprints and video”. Ideas will be judged by a panel of experts for their originality, feasibility, customer experience and sustainability. Registrations are due before July 22, 2022 — apply here!

OH MY GOD! FUND: Out-of-the-box design is the destination
The recently announced OMG by Airbnb! funds is shaped in part by the growing trend towards flexible living that has emerged over the past two years. As a result, travelers seek out the most unexpected spaces. Last month the company launched his Airbnb Categories feature that contextually organizes listings by style and type, so that a search is more than just typing location and dates into a search field. The many categories include Surfing, Camping, Historical, Arctic – OMG! category is designated for the most outrageous dwellings which are the destinations themselves.
With over 30,000 ready made stays added to its OMG! category since its launch last month, Airbnb is looking for 100 more. Entries for the open competition will be reviewed by a judging panel of boundary-pushing design authorities, including Iris Apfelarchitect Koichi Takada (see more here), and an Airbnb OMG! Superhost category.
