Party animal: Airbnb is constantly cracking down on parties

If you’re planning to book an Airbnb with friends for parties, you’ll need to adjust your plans.

Airbnb is codifying a temporary ban on parties initially set up in 2020.

The main reason he is putting this plan in place permanently is simple: it worked.

In a statement, Airbnb said it believes “the neighborhoods and communities in which we operate are as important as the hosts and travelers who use our service.”

The move is intended to deter “very rare cases” of hosts not acting responsibly or guests attempting to host “unauthorized parties”.

Airbnb has been taking a closer look at hosts and guests hosting parties in its listings since 2019. Historically, guests and hosts could allow parties using “their best judgment.”

At the end of 2019, measures were reinforced to prohibit “open” parties and “chronic parties”. Airbnb says some of these parties had become nuisances in their respective neighborhoods. As a result, a neighborhood support line has been launched for people to report any issues.

When it comes to parties, things took off during the pandemic thanks to the closure of clubs and bars. People flocked to Airbnb to host parties. In the interests of public health, parties have been banned.

According to the statement, since the temporary policy was implemented in August 2020, the service has seen a 44% drop in party reports. There are still larger homes that you can book on Airbnb that can safely accommodate more than 16 people.

Anyone who breaks the new rules faces “serious consequences”, ranging from account suspension to complete removal from the platform.

In 2021, Airbnb suspended 6,600 guests for violating the party ban.
