Police investigate bus shelter vandalism in Christchurch

Two bus shelters in Somerford Road and Bridge Street were destroyed by vandals and left with glass strewn across the pavement.

The damage would have occurred on the evening of Thursday, November 24.

Officers investigating the incident appealed for information or dashcam or doorbell footage from the area.

It follows a wave of vandalism directed at bus shelters in the area last month, which was called “unnecessary and senseless” by elected leaders.

The damage was not initially reported, and in some shelters broken glass lay on the floor for days.

Burton and Grange ward councilor Simon McCormack criticized Dorset Police and BCP council for their response to the incidents.

In an email to Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick and the local authority, Cllr McCormack said: ‘This appears to be a complete monumental failure by the council to report incidents and by the police of Dorset to react to what could have been the main evidence.

“At the moment my residents are feeling very discouraged, with a failing council and now a police force that is also failing them.”

Speaking last month, the Christchurch Borough Police Team said that although they were not initially aware of the damage, they had launched an investigation to “identify the culprits”.

They added that they were ‘absolutely committed to tackling crime and anti-social behavior in Christchurch’ and would have officers patrolling the area ‘to reduce future incidents’.
