Police investigating University of Idaho stabbing are overwhelmed with information about a white Hyundai near the crime scene

Police investigating the fatal stabbings of four University of Idaho students were overwhelmed with tips on Friday after they appealed for information about a white Hyundai Elantra spotted near the crime scene.

It has been nearly a month since roommates Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and student Ethan Chapin, 20, were found dead in a residence just off campus, where the three women lived with two other roommates. They were all fatally stabbed and were likely asleep when the attack began, a coroner said.

In the weeks following the grisly massacres, authorities struggled identify a suspect or find the murder weapon used in the attack, but investigate further advance.

“We are continually making progress,” Idaho State Police spokesman Aaron Snell told CNN on Friday. “But this is a criminal investigation, and as we progress we cannot always provide that information.”

The Moscow Police Department on Wednesday called on members of the community to help locate the person or persons inside a white Hyundai Elantra manufactured between 2011 and 2013 that was near the off-campus house in the early hours. morning of November 13.

“Tips and leads led investigators to seek additional information about a vehicle in the immediate vicinity of the King Street residence in the early morning hours of November 13,” the department wrote in a longer press release. early this week.

“Investigators believe the occupant(s) of this vehicle may have critical information to share regarding this case.”

Snell said that since the start of the case, authorities have received more than 6,000 tips. Due to the volume, calls are now being directed to an FBI call center that will help triage leads, according to an update from the Moscow Police Department.

“The Global Call Center has the resources to take these calls, categorize them and send them to investigators so that they can use this advice in the investigation,” the department said.

The FBI also created a website where people can upload footage from security cameras or other digital media of the area recorded at the time of the killings.
