Provide housing for all refugees fleeing Ukraine

Airbnb.org announces that it is working with a number of new international and regional nonprofit organizations active on the ground to offer free temporary accommodation for up to 100,000 refugees fleeing Ukraine. To date, nearly 11,000 people have received temporary housing through Airbnb.org in Europe as part of Airbnb.org’s efforts to help those fleeing Ukraine.

While Airbnb.org works with organizations that support all refugees, regardless of nationality, race, ethnicity, or identity, those nonprofits that work with Airbnb.org are specifically dedicated to assist people from marginalized communities fleeing Ukraine, including African students, people with rare diseases and their families, and those who identify as LGBTQIA+.

Global Empowerment Mission

Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) aims to provide grassroots efforts with significant institutional impact for the most vulnerable disaster-affected populations around the world. Currently on the ground in Hungary, GEM uses support from Airbnb.org to provide accommodation for African students fleeing Ukraine.

Thanks to this incredible program, GemBstrong has already been able to house 1,257 people in comfortable accommodation. Many of them are young students who would have been homeless in freezing temperatures if it wasn’t for them,” – Michael Capponi, president of Global Empowerment Mission.

EURORDIS-Rare Diseases Europe

EURORDIS is a patient-led, non-governmental alliance of patient organizations representing 995 rare disease patient organizations in 74 countries. With support from Airbnb.org, they will coordinate with the community of medical providers to connect patients with a wide range of rare diseases fleeing Ukraine to housing.

“This partnership will bring real added value to people with rare diseases who used to live in Ukraine and have been displaced by war. Very often, people living with a rare disease need extra care and support. We hope this initiative will give hundreds of vulnerable families respite to find their bearings,” – Michael Wilbur, Managing Director of EURORDIS-Rare Diseases Europe.

plant peace is a global non-profit organization founded to spread peace to a troubled world, through humanitarian and environmental initiatives ranging from a network of orphanages and shelters in developing countries and rainforest conservation efforts in the Amazon to LGBTQIA+ rights advocacy and Equality House and Transgender House. Planting Peace is currently on the ground on the border of Poland and Ukraine providing aid to refugees, with a particular focus on those with nowhere to go, no families to provide them with safe housing. and long-term or those who have pets.

This builds on Airbnb.org’s work with a number of other organizations around the world. Recently, Airbnb.org announced collaborations with Refugees welcome ItalyBienvenida, a project of the NGO PxP Embassy eV, and Rescate, Red Acoge and Diaconia Madrid, to provide housing for refugees in Italy, Germany and Spain, respectively. Airbnb.org continues to support the The international organization for migration, HIAS, New Ukraine and Save the Children Sweden and work with the government of Germany, to connect people fleeing Ukraine to free short-term accommodation across Europe. Airbnb.org also coordinates directly with the US federal government to support their commitment to welcome up to 100,000 refugees fleeing Ukraine to the United States.

Airbnb.org is grateful for the continued and overwhelming generosity of Hosts on Airbnb as well as others around the world who seek to support this effort. To date, more than 33,000 people have signed up to offer housing to refugees through Airbnb.org, including more than 20,000 in Europe and nearly 7,000 in the United States.

Anyone wishing to support Airbnb.org’s initiative to help refugees fleeing Ukraine can go to airbnb.org/help-ukraine get involved, including offering free or discounted stays or donating to Airbnb.org. Airbnb co-founders – Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia, Nathan Blecharczyk and his wife Elizabeth – have personally pledged to match up to $10 million in donations to Airbnb.org from March 15, 2022 through April 30, 2022.

Airbnb.org does not offer housing directly to individuals at this time. Airbnb.org works with other nonprofit partners that facilitate stays for refugee guests. Additional updates on the program will be shared on airbnb.org/help-ukraine.
