He had booked an Airbnb cottage in the Cotswold town of Chipping Campden to stay in while working for Talksport at the annual horse racing event.

But he couldn’t find his accommodation and ended up knocking on another door before being questioned by the officer about what he was doing.

McCoist, 59, said: “I booked into this Airbnb place in Chipping Campden and my wife sent me all the directions.

“I took a taxi from Birmingham airport and the boy couldn’t find the street.

“We drove for half an hour and finally we found it. I was staying at number one and I thought ‘number two must be right next to it’.

“I was looking out the window and I could see a woman’s handbag and a hat.

“I knocked on the door. I knew someone was there, but no one answered.

“The next minute, all I hear is, ‘Can I help you? “. I turned around and there’s a cop standing there.

“He said ‘Can I help you sir?’ I said I was looking for “number two” and he said “Oh you won’t find it in there sir”.

“So finally I was very kindly escorted by this policeman to my address.

“It could only happen to me. It was amazing, what a laugh.”

The former Ibrox player and manager’s luck didn’t improve this morning as he arrived late for his 6am departure presenting the Talksport breakfast with Alan Brazil.

He was held up by a steward who demanded to see his accreditation before allowing him to enter the racecourse.

He added: “They wouldn’t let me in at 5 minutes to 6. I had to show all sorts of tickets.

“I thought my face was my ticket but apparently it’s not to the Cheltenham Festival.”
