(Florence, Oregon) — Rollin’ retro with a healthy dose of kitsch and camp: That’s what’s in store for the central Oregon Coast town of Florence this weekend. Dozens of wacky trailers, decked out in all manner of goofy exteriors, hit the road on Saturday, October 8 with the Goin’ with the Flo Vintage Trailer Rally. About 30 trailers in a unique retro style will be shown to the public, as the event returns from an event that proved popular its first two years but was cut short by the pandemic.

All this dizzying fun happens at Heceta Beach RV Park in Florence from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The majority of these trailers are restored to perfection, while some are still in the middle of this process. Look for a vintage swap and sale as well as vintage-inspired arts and crafts for sale at the event. Spectators have the opportunity to rub shoulders with owners and discuss the restoration of these cars, open to questions about the techniques and technology involved, and giving you an idea of what it takes to keep these rare rigs alive. shape to keep rolling. .

“It will be the first time in two years that the public has returned,” said event host Terry Hankins. “Some trailer owners come from as far away as Utah, California, Idaho and Washington. They really like Florence so they’re excited to come back. The open house will coincide nicely with Circles in the Sand, an intricately carved pedestrian mandala, raked from the sand by skilled artists, in front of the Driftwood Shores Resort. It’s only a few blocks from the trailers on Heceta Beach. It’s a great time to go out and enjoy the region.

The hosts, Terry and her husband Dan Hankins, are Florence residents and owners of three classic Airstreams and a 1960s Streamline. They’ve been vintage aficionados for a few years. In keeping with other Florentine traditions, the couple also operate Exploding Whale Beach Camp in Florence and rent out their trailers on Airbnb as an experiential alternative to traditional accommodation.

The first was in 2018, which Hankins said was a considerable success. Hundreds of people came to this one, she told Oregon Coast Beach Connection in 2019. Much of Florence’s Old Town took part in this latest offering, hosting plenty of vintage merchandise in local stores . There were also spooky-themed trailer presentations and a vintage trailer that featured a puppet show.

It was all about preserving the nostalgic era of vacations on the road.
