Rome hosts the world’s first balloon museum

Both an art exhibition and a fun playground

Earlier this month, the world’s first balloon museum opened in the Italian capital, Rome, with an art exhibition titled “Let’s Fly”. Its content is entirely comprised of balloon and inflatable artwork that appeals to audiences in more ways than one. The inflatable art features the works of 14 artists from across Europe, all of whom have used hundreds of thousands of biodegradable balloons to create them in a nod to sustainability and creativity.

Art and play come together to become one

The museum is housed in former bus depots in the Prati district, near the Vatican. Unlike traditional museums, where touching the displays would be a criminal offence, here even playing with them is encouraged. That, and of course, taking as many photos as possible for her personal social media accounts to brag about.

The works of art vary in their variety. For example, there is a room of multicolored balloons suspended against a backdrop of psychedelic music and brightly colored lights. It’s also an opportunity to rediscover your child’s soul and dive into a pool of hundreds of small, light-coloured balls. Further on, giant inflatable sculptures that also serve as a playground for children, installations that can only be moved by bicycle and a tank made up of multicolored birthday balloons.

And since it’s also an art installation, there’s plenty to get you thinking about deeper questions too. For example, Living Forest is an interactive installation with high ethical value to reflect on the theme of the necessary green transition of cities. The public can interact with the work through a dynamic system operated through donations that contribute to an environmental sustainability program.

Once the exhibition is over (it turns until March 5) the works will be reused or recycled.
