Shaq returns home to Newark, NJ to unveil new basketball court

Pro Basketball Hall of Famer and Newark native Shaquille O’Neal unveiled a new “Comebaq Court” in his hometown this week.

What is a Comebaq tribunal, you ask. According to a statement, this is an “effort to renovate existing public basketball courts that could use some TLC.”

The program is an effort of the Shaquille O’Neal Foundation with Icy Hot. The first such court opened in Las Vegas in 2021.

“Giving back through this Comebaq Court in my hometown is really special,” said Shaquille O’Neal. “This effort will have a lasting impact on a community close to my heart.”

“Shaquille O’Neal is a Newark native who brought glory and fame to this city on the NBA court and gave it back to us through community engagement and investment,” the mayor said. of Newark, Ras J. Baraka. “The new “Comebaq Court” is another example of this work, which will greatly benefit our young people. It will quickly become part of our cutting-edge recreation programs that keep our young people engaged and healthy.

According to the Aspen Institute, local sports programs that typically serve youth on a large scale will not be able to recover from the struggles of recent years at the same rate as larger, privately-organized student sports teams. The “Comebaq Courts” project aims to alleviate these inequalities by providing updated spaces for athletes to resume community sports activities.

Shaq was also in town for the crowning achievement of a 33-story mixed-use, mixed-income development. Shaq will have a penthouse apartment in the building, which, according to ABC 7 iIn New York, is informally referred to as “Shaq Tower 2”.
