Store in Dorset recognized as one of the best in the world

A family-run Beaminster store is on a global list that aims to showcase ‘retailers extraordinaire’ across the globe.

Brassica Mercantile, based in The Square, has been recognized alongside stores from as far away as France, the United States and Canada in the list of Best Stores 2022, compiled by The Shopkeepers, a website celebrating independent businesses “unique and inspiring”.

The Beaminster shop offers food and drink, including organic meat and poultry from local farms, deli meats, books and household items a stone’s throw from sister company Brassica Restaurant, which uses ingredients that she sells.

Owner Louise Chidgey has over 20 years of experience in the retail industry and wanted to create a brand “that reflects a laid-back lifestyle”.

Brassica Mercantile also offers a delivery and collection service to customers, as well as gift cards.

It was honored in the Best Food and Provisions Shops in the Best Shops guide, sitting in the same esteem as stores in New York and Vancouver.

The store was just one of a handful in the UK to make the list, including businesses from Somerset and London.

Brassica wrote on Facebook that he was “incredibly happy” to be included in the global list.

“This year we received an incredible response to our 2022 Best Shops campaign,” The Shopkeepers said on its website.

“This year the roster includes newcomers and oldies but goodies, rosters from last year and the year before.

“Stores that delight discovery and inspire browsing. Stores we visit when we travel or local stores we love to return to again and again.

“We have discovered many lovely stores thanks to your nominations. Unfortunately, we cannot include all the stores on our list – that would be way too long.”

Other categories aimed to find the best bookstores, stationery stores and gift shops around the world.
