Succession Filming Locations: In Which Countries Was Season 3 Filmed?

The hit satire Sky Atlantic Succession is back in full force this week, with the billionaire Roy family back on fine, dysfunctional form.

Following a media mogul, Logan Roy, and his adult children as they fight for his empire and face off in a series of tense family reunions, the show is famous for showing the lifestyle and travels of the ultra-rich.

In the past, the Succession scouts took the cast to dramatic settings such as a yacht off the Croatian islands, Oheka Castle, the Long Island wedding venue and, well, Herefordshire.

The second season memorably saw the main cast depart on an 85-meter superyacht, Solandge, cruising the Croatian islands of Mljet and – which can be rented in real life for the cool price of €1,000,000 per week.

But the season three production schedule has been beset with pandemic delays and contingency plans. So where did the Roys end up flying off to?

Tuscany

the Succession the team flew to Italy in June 2021 to begin filming. “On my way to Italy for Season 3 of Succession! If I could have happily jumped down that catwalk, I would have been beyond thrilled!!” posted costume designer Midge Denton at the time. The second half of the new season will see the Roys decamp to Tuscany, where filming has resumed at the 17th-century Villa Cetinale.Set in impressive gardens of pointed cypresses and fruit-laden lemon trees, the picture-perfect Roman Baroque villa was once home to a pope – it can seat 25 people and has an outdoor swimming pool, tennis court and optional private chef, and can be hired for €25,000 per week This is in Sovicille, but the crew have also made for view-tastic La Terrazza Del Chiostro restaurant and the spa town of Chianciano Terme, as well as Florence, Montalcino and the Val d’Orcia.

Virginia, United States

While filming in Virginia, the Succession the team took over The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, famous for its lavish marble columns and flamboyant chandelier-lit halls – as well as its city shoots. “I watched my favorite show in Richmond, Virginia tonight! Some fans have speculated that Richmond was used as a substitute for Croatia, where parts of the end of season two were fixed, as the team was unable to shoot there during the pandemic. But a Richmond resident who stumbled across the set disagrees, saying, “It looks like it’s set in Virginia and not a substitute anywhere else,” the fan sleuth said. “They had a Virginia (and Richmond) flag front and center in one shot, and in the other shot Tom was being dropped off at the hotel and the car he was in had license plates. Milano

The movie addict also reported that filming took place in Milan, Italy. Few details are known about the city’s place in the plot of season three, but we do know that the show’s writers and producers chose not to incorporate the global pandemic into the story. Actress Sarah Snook, who plays Shiv Roy, told reporters: “[The protagonists] are really rich people. And sadly, none of the truly wealthy people in the world were going to be affected by the pandemic. While in Italy, Brian Cox (who plays patriarch Logan Roy) was reported to have stayed at £350 a night ADLER Spa Resort Thermal baths, while fellow actors such as Kieran Culkin (who plays wayward son Roman Roy) have rented lavish private villas in the surrounding countryside. Culkin stayed with his family in all five bedrooms Villa Gonzola, with a 12 meter swimming pool, playground and tennis court.

New York State

As you can imagine, more time closer to home — that’s Manhattan, for the Roys — factored into the 2020 filming schedule. Reunions and glamorous parties in season three were filmed. at hotels such as the Mandarin Oriental, The Pierre, Marriott Marquis and that classic screen favourite, The Plaza. There’s also a starring role for the newly built Hudson Yards neighborhood on the West Side, home to striking architecture and shopping and hotel complexes. The crew filmed scenes at the shed cultural venue among other venues, famous for its eye-catching quilt-like facade. The seaside neighborhood of East Hampton, New York also served as a base for the billionaire characters, with actors congregating around the towns of Montauk and Wainscott to film scenes.

Will Succession continue to tour around the world?

It is not yet known if season three will be the last season of Succession. But of the show’s international flavor, writer Lucy Prebble said Deadline, “There is… a lot of talk about becoming more international than we have before, which has to do with the relationship between the media industry and international countries. The way international countries feed, control and finance the media in a way that is not spoken about as clearly as they should. There are big conversations about how countries and media intersect right now.
