FINE FEELING FRIDAY

The week that started very hot (20 degrees above average since New Year’s Day) started to look more like January on Thursday, and it’s a bit cooler on Friday.

Morning low temperatures drop into the 30s with a few scattered frosts, and you can expect a mild, sunny afternoon: high temperatures range from the lower 50s over the highest terrains of eastern Alabama in the middle and upper 50s around Tuscaloosa and Birmingham.

The weekend starts dry Saturday morning, but a cold front brings a chance of showers as early as Saturday evening. More rain develops overnight through Sunday morning, and some of it can be heavy at times: particularly north and west of the Birmingham area where more than 1-2″ of rain could fall Sunday at noon.

Showers look much less impressive south of Interstate 20 through Sunday afternoon.

Clouds and showers are keeping temperatures a little low: highs in the 60s on Saturday but only in the 50s on Sunday.

SEVEN-DAY FORECAST

After a rainy weekend, next week picks up where this week ended with a mild, dry and sunny Monday.

An active westerly flow aloft (a “zonal” flow in the jet stream) brings some disturbances with some scattered showers from Tuesday. This same flow pattern keeps the cold weather, at least the really cold things, locked up in the north until the end of the week.

We are still expecting a pattern change that will bring cooler air around the middle of the month; however, it is becoming increasingly clear that “colder” in this case has nothing to do with the Arctic blast in late December.
