The decomposing bodies of a mother and twins found dead in a car in Florida

Florida police are investigating the deaths of a mother and her 3-year-old twins, after their bodies were found decomposing inside a Cadillac on Friday.

Officers arrived at the Manatee Cove apartment complex in the town of Mebourne on Sunday evening, after a 911 caller reported a suspicious vehicle with a “really bad smell” coming from inside.

“The windows are all fogged up. They said there was like a really bad smell coming out of it,” the caller said, according to WFTV. “But, you can’t see into the car because the windows are so fogged up.”

Police identified those inside as Andrea Langhorst, 35, and her twins Olivia and Adam.

Investigators are awaiting autopsy and toxicology reports to learn more about how the family died and how long they were inside the car.

“It’s still under investigation. We don’t have any information on how long they were there. But she was living in her car,” spokesman Lt. Shaun Hill said at the time. from the Melbourne Police Department.

Langhorst, known to friends and family as “Andy,” lived off her car and Airbnb rentals with the kids. Her family had been trying to reach her since early March without success, and had already asked the police to help find her.

“She was a free spirit, smart as a whip, beautiful, but lived her life to the beat of her own drummer. It’s just a tragedy,” her father Randy told Florida Today. “The twins were her pride and her joy. All I can think is maybe… maybe the car was driving and fell asleep, maybe the fumes overwhelmed them. I do not know.”

He had discussed bringing the children with him, but his daughter refused.

“It was final. It was his decision. We didn’t exactly approve of his lifestyle. It’s all retrospective, but I’m going to kick my ass for the rest of my life,” he said.

Mr Langhorst also told the site he believed drugs may be involved. Andrea Langhorst had previously been arrested for drug-related offenses, records show.

Police say there is no active danger to the community.
