the downtown circle suspends the encircled metropolis 500 meters above dubai

futuristic space metropolis znera encircles dubai

ZNera space is considering the futuristic Downtown Circle to radically redefine that of Dubai skyline with an elevated hyper-efficient urban center. The concept proposes a 550-metre-high (1,800 ft) ringed vertical city that encircles the monumental Burj Khalifa, spanning a circumference of 3,000 meters (9,800 ft). Responding to the urban fabric of the emirate characterized by isolated high-rise buildings, Downtown Circle presents a singular mixed-use megastructure that can simultaneously become a new urban and natural landmark of the United Arab Emirates. Inside, it is home to all the typologies that make up typical bustling urban metropolises – from residential, public and commercial spaces, to a diverse Skygarden green “lung” that sweeps across the entire ring, providing diverse climates and natural habitats.

ZNera Space’s conceptual Downtown Circle establishes a self-sufficient vertical urban center in the heart of Dubai. At 550 meters high and 3,000 meters wide, the continuous ring-shaped metropolis will float above the city’s skyline, supported by four vertical beams. For the sake of sustainability, the Architecture studio based in Dubai redefines typical urban models with a more human typology that seeks to imitate nature and create diverse public spaces. The mixed-use complex pursues an efficient alternative to traditional singular, unconnected skyscrapers in metropolitan areas, consisting of two living rings held together by a continuous suspended green belt – the Skypark. The structure will consist of five levels, divided into smaller units to create a range of residential, public, commercial and cultural programs.

A new contemporary symbol of the city and green landmark, the Skypark is sandwiched between the two living rings. Forming the central spine of the Downtown Circle, it offers clean, fresh air, abundant natural light, and panoramic city views. With a unique hybrid and mixed spatial typology, it combines high densities with lush greenery, and dynamic urban functions with a quality user experience. It is integrated with offices, research centers, cultural spaces and a 3D urban and green ecosystem that will function as the “lung” of the ring. Within the green belt, ZNera Space permeates various natural climates and habitats, including canyons, sand dunes, swamps, waterfalls, digital caves, and tropical vegetation.

In the interests of sustainability, ZNera Space wants Downtown Circle to be an integral part of the urban ecosystem. Their plan proposes sanctuaries for wild plants and food production, designated areas for rainwater harvesting and solar power plants, and systems to store carbon and filter pollutants from the air.

The architects are also incorporating a futuristic rail transport system that will include a fleet of suspended pods moving at a speed of 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour. Carrying passengers from node to node along the outer perimeter of the ring’s lowest level, the pods will capture a 360-degree view of the entire city below from a height of 500 meters.
