The Modern House Coffee Shop will open in the Titusville area of ​​Birmingham on September 23 [PHOTOS]

The cafe of the modern house returns to its roots in the Titusville neighborhood.

Non-profit cafe, which hires homeless people to provide job training and life skills, opens friday september 23 to its new location at 422 Sixth Avenue South.

Bham Now first reported on the new Titusville cafe over a year and a half ago in early 2020, when owner Troy Whetstone and Seed Coffee Company announced a joint partnership.

“So many people believe in what we’re doing,” added Whetstone.

The location

Whetstone, whose family lives in Titusville, thinks he’s picked a great place for coffee.

“I was looking for a place, so I was driving back and forth from Sixth Avenue South, and then I saw this house. It reminded me of New Orleans,” he told Bham Now.

The location is special. It’s near the UAB. Across the street is the Birmingham Police Department and Academy. A block or two away, within walking distance, there is memorial park, DC BLOX and Golden Flake.

And starting this week, the new Xpress line has a stop less than a block from The Modern House.

Good food and coffee

Of course, there is the big question. How is the food? If you’ve ever frequented The Modern House pop-ups, you know that Chef Marcus will be serving up his specialties:

• Cinnamon brioches
• Loaded Oatmeal Bowl
• Pastries, such as blondies, chocolate chip cookies, peanut cookies, red velvet cake, and lemon cake

Another local Magic City twist – the coffee is locally roasted from Seeds and the drinks will pay homage to Birmingham with names like Black Barons, Rickwood and Vulcan.

The excitement is rising

The community is very excited for The Modern House to come to Titusville to lead a new revival.

“District 6 is delighted to welcome a new business,” said Birmingham City Councilor Crystal Smitherman. “It’s the perfect place to grab a coffee on the way to work or study and drink a latte. It will be a place where people can have small gatherings where artists can present their word or poetry. Titusville was like Black Wall Street years ago and it’s only the beginning of the return of black businesses along the Sixth Avenue corridor.

Initially, The Modern House will be open Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The space will be available on weekends for rental. Hours may change depending on demand.

“We’re basically trying to set the stage for the community to tell us what they want to do,” Whetstone concluded.
