The number of tourists visiting Prague attractions remains below 2019 figures

Despite a high number of tourists deciding to visit the capital of the Czech Republic, Prague, data shows that heritage sites, as well as tourist attractions, have still not reached the levels recorded during the pre-pandemic period.

Of all the tourist attractions the country has, it has been revealed that only two of them reached the 2019 figures, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Expats Cz explains that the Old Town Hall has been visited by around 40% fewer people so far this year compared to the same period in 2019. Prague Castle, Petřín Tower and Powder Tower have also recorded a lower number of visitors.

The number of visitors who visited Prague Castle in July was approximately 50% lower than the number of visitors in July 2019.

Prague City Tourism spokeswoman Klára Malá said tourist attractions are not seeing high visitor numbers because there is a lack of arrivals from Southeast Asia and Russia.

The spokesperson explained that Asians do not travel to Czechia due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions in their home country. As for the Russians, she said they were not going to the Czech Republic because of the war in Ukraine and the restrictions imposed on them.

While Czechia has yet to reach pre-pandemic levels, the country has already surpassed last year’s levels.

Earlier in August, the Statistical Office of the Czech Republic said that in the second quarter of 2022, around five million people were accommodated in collective accommodation establishments, exceeding 2021 levels by 229%.

“During the reporting period, a total of five million people arrived in collective accommodation establishments, which is 229% more than the previous year. The number of domestic guests more than doubled, and the number of foreign guests hosted was also significantly higher than last year,” Director of the Department of Trade, Transport, Services, Tourism and Environmental Statistics of the CZSO, Marie Boušková, said.

The number of overnight stays by customers in collective accommodation establishments in the second quarter of 2022 reached 12 million overnight stays. Such a high number of nights spent by customers in the Czech Republic represents a 190% increase compared to the same period last year.

It was noted that the largest number of foreign guests came from Germany, Slovakia and Poland. As for non-EU countries, it was explained that most tourist arrivals come from the United States.
