The University of Amsterdam asks international students to find accommodation before traveling to the Netherlands

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) has urged all international students not to travel to the Dutch capital if they cannot find suitable accommodation by August 15.

The University itself provides accommodation for students. However, as the application list is hugely oversubscribed, students have been warned that they are unlikely to be able to find suitable accommodation if they fail to secure suitable accommodation by August 15.

“The housing market in Amsterdam is extremely difficult. Therefore, we urge you not to come to Amsterdam for your studies unless you have secured suitable accommodation by August 15, 2022. Without the guarantee of a residence, you will likely find yourself in an untenable situation. This means that you will have to resort to (expensive) hotels or hostels, and this situation is likely to last long after you arrive,” The UvA statement reads.

NL Times explains that the UvA has tried to limit the number of international students amid the housing crisis. Nevertheless, such a thing has been impossible since the current policy does not allow the University to limit several courses due to EU rules, which allow EU students to travel and study freely in the States members.

A University spokesman said the UvA had submitted a proposal to change the law to the Minister two years ago, but during the previous Cabinet no decision had been taken. The University is not waiting for the new Cabinet to make a decision.
