Times wins 10 Lowell Thomas Awards

The Times has won 10 Lowell Thomas Awards from the Society of American Travel Writers, among the highest honors in travel journalism.

“It’s truly a wonderful recognition of the efforts of everyone on the desktop to find and tell compelling stories in new ways, and to help our readers travel better at an incredibly difficult time,” said Amy Virshup, editor at Head of Travel.

In the first award given to an individual journalist, visual editor Stephen Hiltner was named Travel Journalist of the Year. A portfolio of his work was recognized by the judges for his powerful writing and photography that “fills the imagination of a destination”.

Travel won gold in the Newspaper Travel Coverage category for stories that the judges said provided “unique perspectives on typical and atypical story ideas are as enjoyable and surprising as the coverage.”

The office’s award-winning coverage ranged from breaking news and service journalism to photography and interactive graphics.

The additional winners were:

“Is travel next in the fight over who benefits from Native American culture?“, Karen Schwartz’s article on the appropriation of Native American culture by the travel industry, won gold in the Cultural Tourism category.

In special trips, “Recreating a Family’s Lost Holocaust History, Step by Step‘ by Jessica Shaw won silver.

Frank Herfort won silver for Still Photography for a piece in the World Through a Lens series, “The incredible grandeur of Soviet-era subways.

How safe are you from Covid when traveling?– a Travel, Business and Interactive Graphics collaboration by Mika Gröndahl, Tariro Mzezewa, Or Fleisher and Jeremy White – won bronze in the Robert Haru Fisher category for travel health/safety coverage.

Paige McClanahan won bronze in the Travel News/Investigative Reporting category for “Barcelona takes on Airbnb.

The On the Road 2021 series by Christopher Miller, Ron Stodghill, Richard Rubin, Elaine Glusac and Lauren Sloss won bronze in the Special Packages/Series category.
Honorable mention went to Stephen Hiltner, Tracy Mumford, Dan Powell and Matt Ruby in the Multimedia Single Work category for “Six days afloat in the Everglades.

In the Travel Abroad category, Heather Murphy received an honorable mention for “Why is everyone going to the Dominican Republic? »
