Top 5 Movie Releases in August 2022

After many major releases in July, August should also bring to the theater a wide assortment of titles with a bit of everything for everyone. The month offers offers in several genres such as action, adventure, thriller, fantasy and horror. The titles will also feature some of the hottest actors in the industry, including Brad Pitt, Idris Elba, Tilda Swinton, and Diane Keaton, among others.

With so many options to choose from, fans needn’t feel overwhelmed. We’ve created a list of the best releases of the month spanning all genres and explored what you can expect from each title.


High-speed train, The beast and more films are expected to arrive in theaters in August

1) High-speed train

Release date: August 5, 2022

High-speed train is an upcoming action comedy thriller from the house of Sony. The film features an ensemble cast including Brad Pitt, Joey King, Sandra Bullock, Bad Bunny, Brian Tyree Henry, Michael Shannon, Hiroyuki Sanada, and others. Directed by an industry veteran and co-director of John WickDavid Leitch, High-speed train is sure to pack some explosive action sequences.

The film follows assassin Ladybug, who is fed up with her job and is on her last mission in Tokyo to retrieve a briefcase from one of Japan’s fastest bullet trains. The funny thing is that the train is filled with assassins from all over the world with missions that overlap with each other and his own.

High-speed train promises two hours of action-packed entertainment. Definitely try to catch this high-octane ride when it hits theaters on August 5, 2022.


2) Mac and Rita

Release date: August 12, 2022

Mac and Rita is a comedy-drama directed by Katie Aselton with a screenplay by Madeline Walter and Paul Welsh. The film stars Diane Keaton in the lead role as an older version of the character of Elizabeth Lail, alongside Taylour Paige, Dustin Milligan, Simon Rex and others.

Mac and Rita follows the story of a 30-year-old woman, Mack Martin, who has always felt much more mature for her age. When she goes alone to the bachelor party of one of her best friends, Carla, she transforms into an older woman. The film follows her as she lives the life she always thought her inner self wanted and deserved.


3) The beast

Release date: August 19, 2022

The beast is an upcoming survival thriller by Baltasar Kormakur that stars Idris Elba in the lead role. Jaime Sullivan’s story picked up some momentum with Elba’s charismatic presence and the thrill of witnessing a showdown between man and nature, as we saw in the trailer.

The beast follows recently widowed Dr. Nate Samuels on a trip to South Africa with his family, where he first met his wife. He has decided to return with his two daughters in hopes of reconnecting with them, but what awaits them is not a journey of healing across the savannah, but a desperate fight for survival.

They are hunted by a bloodthirsty lion who views all humans as his enemy after surviving poachers. Unlike natural predators, the lion went on a massive killing spree without needing to hunt and eventually set its eyes on the Samuels family.


4) Barbaric

Release date: August 31, 2022

Barbaric was hailed as one of the most mind-blowing horror films by audiences when it premiered at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Barbaric comes from Zack Cregger, creator of Miss March (2007) and Castaway (2016-2018). Although different from his other generally optimistic projects, Barbaric they say he has his share of humor.

The film follows Tess as the unlucky protagonist, a young woman who has booked an Airbnb in a Detroit suburb for the duration of her stay, for a job interview in the city. But she reaches the address to find that a stranger is already apparently renting the place.

Against her better judgment, she decides to stay the night only to soon discover that there is something very sinister going on in the house and there is an unknown guest. Barbaric is not your ordinary horror movie, but is designed to have you screaming, laughing and gasping throughout its 100 minute runtime.


5) Three thousand years of nostalgia

Release date: August 31, 2022

Three thousand years of nostalgia is August’s offering in the fantasy drama genre. The film is another Idris Elba star, with Tilda Swinton as the protagonist. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker George Miller, the film was adapted from a short story by AS Byatt, The Djinn in the eye of the nightingale.

The film follows Tilda Swinton as Alithea Binnie, a rational academic who, while traveling to Istanbul for a lecture, procures a souvenir from the Istanbul market. But back at her hotel, she discovers that her memory is a jinn. The djinn offers her three wishes in exchange for her own freedom, but Alithea is suspicious of the many tales that warn against wishes over the djinn’s offerings.

The film revolves around their exchanges and conversations as Alithea makes a decision about how to use her wishes. What she finally wishes for them, it takes them by surprise.
