Trevor Noah took to the stage as host of the 2022 Grammys, armed with plenty of comedic fodder from recent current events.
During his monologue, Noah included a joke about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at last week’s Oscars. “We’re going to listen to music, we’re going to dance, we’re going to sing, we’re going to keep people’s names out of our mouths and we’re going to hand out awards all night long,” he said.
Noah, who hosted last year’s show from outside the Los Angeles Convention Center amid stricter COVID-19 protocols, noted that holding the biggest music night in Las Vegas this year meant being surrounded by people. who were shooting. “Last time people were doing shots, but it was more Moderna and Pfizer,” he joked.

The Oscar slap was also alluded to when Questlove presented the award for Song of the Year. “I’m going to give this award, and I hope you stay 500 feet away from me,” he joked before adding that he was “playing fair”. Commenting on how touring has changed amid the pandemic, the host cracked: “You know it’s been tough when your favorite artists go from trying to sell you music to trying to sell you pictures of digital monkeys.”
During a moment when South African-born Noah sat at a table with Silk Sonic, the host joked that critics felt something was missing from the duo’s recent Vegas residency. “They were like, ‘The only thing the cold makes the show better is if there was a bit of a South African element to it,'” the comedian said.
