Tyga recalls the ‘conflict’ that led to his withdrawal from the song Pop Smoke

Tyga and Pop Smoke created a handful of songs together before the latter passed away, but there would have been one more had it not been for another artist’s bookings.

In an interview for Hotboxing with Mike Tyson released on January 12, Tyga opened up about working with the late rapper and what got in the way of one of their collaborations.

“We had made two records before he came through, and then one of them – it was a dispute over it, so I was like, ‘That’s cool, get me off of this. I don’t stumble. Somebody else didn’t want me on the song…another artist,” Tyga said. “So I was like, ‘That’s cool. I’m not tripping. Anyway, let’s just do something else. And he was cool like that.

He continued, “And we did another song and we finished it, but we didn’t finish the last song because he came by just before the album came out. But he texted me , like: ‘Yo, I want to put a Latin artist, a female artist. Who do you think?’ And I was like we had to put Karol G on it, because at the time I was like, ‘Karol G’s poppin. Let’s put it on! So we end up putting it on for this album.

The song Tyga was referring to is “Have fun” from Pop’s first posthumous album, Aim for the stars, aim for the moon.

“And then I did another song with him and Quavo that they did that I jumped on later,” he added, referring to “West Coast Shit” from the same album. “And then the file ‘Sun’ was a song he did. My boy used to do all his A&R stuff, so he made a record for him, then he had the verse and we just put it out there and it made sense.

Tyga then compared Pop Smoke to 50 Cent, explaining how he saw a similar trajectory for Pop before he was tragically killed.

“He was out of here, buddy. He was different, bro,” Tyga said. “He was a star – his whole vibe. He definitely would have changed rap to the extent, which he feels now. It’s almost like when 50 came out and was super gangsta but then he started doing some melodies, he started making these records and those records got bigger. I also feel like Pop Smoke – his melodic records are bigger than his street songs.

Pop Smoke mural vandalized in Brooklyn

Four men have since been charged in the murder of Pop Smoke in February 2020, including the alleged killer who was only 15 at the time. Police say their motive was to steal Pop Smoke’s diamond-encrusted Cuban and Rolex link chain, but they only managed to swipe his watch and then sold it for just $2,000.

One of the suspects, Corey Walker, 21confessed to a cellmate that the crew only discovered Pop’s location through his social media.

Prior to filming, Pop Smoke had posted an Instagram story of designer bags showing the address of his Los Angeles-based Airbnb on the packaging.
