Ukrainian forces reportedly ambushed a Russian convoy attempting to advance on kyiv, capturing and destroying several tanks in the process.

The military vehicles were stopped in Bovary, a town located in the eastern suburbs of the capital.

Fighting in the area has intensified in recent days as Vladimir Putin’s troops attempt to move into Kyiv from multiple directions.

But so far, their progress has been slow, and Ukrainian forces have pushed the troops back several times.

In the latest skirmish on Wednesday, Ukrainian troops were filmed shooting down several Russian military vehicles with artillery fire.

In one video, a column of Russian tanks is shelled by Ukrainian forces on a village road.

In the footage, Russian tanks can be seen clustered on the road, while several are blown up. Soldiers can also be seen running away from stationary vehicles.

A Defense Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said: “The commander of the occupier Colonel Zakharov’s regiment has been liquidated.

“During the fighting in the Brovary district of Kyiv Oblast, the Battalion Tactical Group (BTGr) of the 6th Tank Regiment (Chebarkul) of the 90th Panzer Division of the Central Command suffered significant losses in personnel and equipment .”

Civilians remaining in the suburbs say Ukrainian forces tried to repel Russian tanks but occupation troops are infiltrating the area.

Overnight, Ukraine’s general staff said Russian forces were continuing their “offensive operation” to encircle kyiv, while pressing attacks on a series of other towns across the country.

A 40-mile-long convoy of Russian forces has been ominously closing in on the capital for several days, but is currently stuck north of the city.

In Borodianka, northeast of kyiv, several Russian tanks and a base were filmed being bombed by a Bayraktar drone, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense (MoD).

Images of Russian tanks and military vehicles engulfed in flames on the outskirts of kyiv have also been shared online.

Russo-Ukrainian War: Everything you need to know

Since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the country has suffered extensive damage and loss of life during a major bombing campaign.

More than two million Ukrainian refugees have fled, as cities face shortages of food, water, heating and medicine – some having to resort to melting snow for water.

Countries retaliated by imposing sanctions on Russia and oligarchs such as Roman Abramovich, while big companies like Starbucks, McDonald’s and Coca-Cola suspended operations in the country.

However, despite these economic blows, Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown no signs of calling off the attack any time soon.
